Star (Ballarat, VIC) - Oct 30 1858 - FATAL MINING ACCIDENT.-An accident resulting in the death of a young man named James Nankervis, occurred in a drive of the claim of the Cornish, Durham, and Cumberland Company, Frenchman's Lead, on the evening of the 28th inst. The deceased, with another man, was at work on the reef in a drive some 300 feet from the main shaft, for want of room to work on the face of the drive. The foreman of their shift had just called out to warn them of the danger of working where they were, when, ere they had time to answer, a solid block of earth fell, striking the decased, who was on his knees, and partially covering him. The other man was also struck, but received no serious hurt. The decased was got out in a few minutes, quite dead; his face being covered with blood, and his left leg broken above the ankle. He was a native of Cornwall, and aged twenty-one. On the 29th inst, the Coroner held an inquest on the body at the Junction HoteL Sebastopol, when a verdict of accidental death was returned.
