Biography

Henry NANKERVIS was born on 6 October 1862 in Forbes, Colony of New South Wales^[1]. His parents were Henry NANKERVIS and Grace STEPHENS.

MR. HENRY NANKERVIS, J.P.

An old resident of the Upper Murray, in the person of Mr. H. Nankervis, died suddenly at Corryong on Sunday, aged 62 years. The late Mr. Nankervis went to Corryong with his parents about 45 years ago. Later on deceased took up land at Colac Colac, where he prospered. His property was gradually added to by the purchase of adjoining holdings. Shortly after reaching manhood, the late Mr. Nankervis manifested an interest in public affairs, and, at various times, held the position of president and councillor to the Towong Shire Council, and, after the new Upper Murray shire was formed, following the severance from the Towong shire, he held a seat at the council table until his death. He was also a Justice of the Peace and an ardent worker on the Repatriation Committee. He leaves a widow, three sons—Messrs. George, Henry and Arthur—and three daughters—Mesdames J. C. Brown, of Corryong, J. Ashton and Miss Ruby Nankervis—to mourn their loss. He was buried at Cudgewa cemetery on Tuesday with Masonic honors, fully 30 members of the Currajong Lodge— of which he was elective chaplain— paying their last respects to his memory. A number of the Cudgewa Rechabite Tent were in attendance, and held their service also. The funeral was a very large one, and among the many wreaths was a beautiful one from the local Returned Soldiers' Association.
