Richard Sowton Nankivell was born on 25 Jul 1855 in Devon, England, United Kingdom, son of Edward Nankivell (1821 - 1897) and Ann (Sowton) Nankivell (~1820 - 1891).
He came to South Australia in 1857 on the Henry Moore. He was 2 years old. The ship arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 13th September 1857[1][2].

Richard married Elizabeth Jane Oliver (~1862 - 1953) on 25 Nov 1882 in Wallaroo, South Australia [3]. Their children were:
Richard died on 29 May 1916 in Port Pirie, South Australia, Australia aged 60. He was buried on May 30 1916. His remains were removed from the Central Hotel Lane and he was buried in the Port Pirie Cemetery.[4][5].
