Biography

Charles Napier son of Charles Napier and his second wife, Christian Hamilton was born at Merchiston Hall on 6 March 1786 and was baptised at Falkirk on 11 March 1786. [1]

On 12 June 1815 at Holy Trinity Gosport in Hampshire he married Elizabeth Ellers, widow of Lieutenant Edward Ellers RN and daughter of George Younghusband. [2]

"The Queen has been pleased to grant unto Sir Charles Napier, Knight Commander of the Bath and Rear Admiral of the Blue Squadron of Her Majesty's Fleet, Her Royal license and permission that he may accept and wear the insignia of the grand cross of the Order of the Tower and the Sword, which Her Majesty, the Queen of Portugal was pleased to confer upon him, in testimony of her Majesty's approbation of his conduct while in Her Most Faithful Majesty's actual Service; and also that he may accept and wear the rose of a Knight of the Order of Maria Theresa of Austria; the cross of the third class of the Order of St George of Russia; and the insignia of the second class of the Order of the Red Eagle of Prussia which their Majesties the Emperor of Austria, the Emperor of Russia and the King of Prussia have been severally pleased to confer upon that Officer, in testimony of their Majesties' approbation of his distinguished services in the late naval operations on the coast of Syria; and that he may enjoy all the rights and privileges thereunto annexed. And also to command, that Her Majesty's said concession and especial mark of Her royal favour be registered, together with the relative documents, in Her Majesty's College of Arms." [3]

He died at Merchistoun Hall on 6 November 1860 [4] [5] and was buried at All Saints, Catherington.
