Archibald Napier was born about 1625, the son of Archibald Napier, 1st Baron Napier of Merchistoun and his wife, Margaret Graham. He married Elizabeth daughter of John Erskine, Earl of Mar and his wife, Jean Hay, probably in 1641. Together they had five children. Aged about 17 when Charles I raised the Royal Standard at Nottingham on 22 August 1642 Archibald was a follower of his uncle, James Graham. When Montrose was defeated at the Battle of Philiphaugh in 1645 Alexander accompanied his uncle in his flight to Norway. He did not return with his uncle in 1650 but did obtained permission from the exiled Charles II to do so. Before Archibald could return to Scotland Montrose was executed and Archibald remained on the continent, dying aged about 33, at Middelburg in the Netherlands on 4 September 1658.
