Biography

Alice was born in Clonmel, Ireland around 1797. She married John Husband and emigrated to Canada before 1830. By 1861 she had been admitted to the University Brouch of Provincial Lunatic Asylum.[1] On both the 1861 and 1871 census she was marked as having an unsound mind.[2] She died (age 76) on August 31, 1873 in Toronto, York, Ontario.[3]

Research Notes

She might have married John Husband in County Waterford, Ireland in 1818.[4][5] The 1861 census for John (living with his son William and daughter-in-law Sarah) says he was married in 1818.[6]

Birth

Her son, Henry, had written down in the family Bible his parents births. John Husband was the son of George Husband and Elizabeth White, born January 2, 1782 in Monmount Village, Tipperary Co., Ireland. Alicia Napier was the daughter of William Napier and -----, born 1795 in Clonmel, 'Southern' Ireland. He doesn't specify a county.[7] This Wordpress blogger has more information on John Husband and on Alicia Napier.

Parents Rumours

It is only speculation that Alicia maybe the daughter of Francis and Mary Douglas Napier (Find a Grave memorials #85132110 and #85132208). Francis's daughter Alicia Colden Napier died when she was 18 in 1814.[8]

The family story says she ran off with John Husband (weaver). According to stories passed down the Napier clan considered her dead in their eyes. [If the rumor is true, then the family faked her death]. The family who is still living are certain this is the daughter of Francis and Mary. Some allege that Alice is a great granddaughter of Francis, the Fifth Lord Napier of Scotland.

Records show she died while in the Toronto Asylum. Death record has her name as Alice. Census, other records has one or the other name. She is interned here and not with her husband John Husband at St Jude's. Her name is on the headstone, but does not include 'Colden' according to the transcription done in the 1970s.

Indexed Ancestry record for her son Henry's marriage says her name was written as Miss Alicia Colden,[9] which is wrong; it's just "Alicia".[10] It does the same for Margaret's marriage record - Ancestry indexed it as Alicia Napier,[11] but it only says Alice Husband.[12]
