Colonel H.H. Sri Sriman Maharaja Sir Nripendra Narayan Bhup Bahadur, Maharaja of Cooch Behar, was born in 1862. He died in 1911.

Colonel H.H. Sri Sriman Maharaja Sir Nripendra Narayan Bhup Bahadur, Maharaja of Cooch Behar, GCIE (23.2.1888), CB (m 20.5.1898). b. at the Dhaluabari Palace, Cooch-Behar, 4th October 1862, younger son of H.H. Sri Sriman Maharaja Narendra Narayan Bhup Bahadur, Maharaja of Cooch Behar, by his gandharva wife, H.H. Rajmata Sri Sri Nishimayi Deo Aye Devati, educ. at the Ward’s Institution, Benares, Patna Collegiate Sch, Bankipur, and Government Coll, Patna, Bihar, and Presidency Coll, Calcutta, Bengal. Appointed as Heir Apparent by his father, on his deathbed. Succeeded on the death of his father, 6th August 1863 and was installed on the gadi that same evening Cooch Behar Royal Palace (Rajbhari) (confirmed by the GOI 15th January 1864). Granted a permanent salute of 13-guns 26th June 1867. Reigned under a Council of Regency composed of Maharanis Kameshwari Dangar Aye Devati, Nistarini Deo Aye Devati and Nishimayi Deo Aye Devati 6th August 1863 to 15th January 1864. Thereafter under a British appointed Commissioner in charge of the Administration, until he came of age and was invested with full ruling powers, at Cooch Behar, 8th November 1883. Granted the personal title of Maharaja Bhup Bahadur, 25th February 1880 (made hereditary, 16th October 1884). Ordered the spelling of the name of the state regularised to ‘Cooch Behar’ 13th April 1896. Hon Maj British Army 22/8/1883, attached 6th Prince of Wales’s Own Bengal Cavalry, prom Hon Lieut-Col 30/7/1887, Hon ADC to the Prince of Wales 30/7/1887-1901, served in the NWF on the staff of the GOC Mohmand 1897 and Tirah expeditions 1898 (MID, CB, medal), prom Hon Col 11/1/1902, Hon ADC to the King-Emperor Edward VII 11/1/1902-1910 (as Prince of Wales from 24/5/1887), Extra ADC to the King-Emperor George V 4/6/1911. Attended the Imperial Durbar at Delhi in 1877, where he received a sword of honour. Attended the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Queen-Empress Victoria in London in 1887, the Coronations of the King-Emperor Edward VII in 1902 and of the King-Emperor George V in 1911. A great moderniser and reformer, he transformed almost every aspect of his state, building schools and colleges, hospitals, roads, temples, and numerous other public works. The senior educational institution, Victoria College, teaching up to the standard of the MA degree of the Calcutta University. The state library housed a collection of books said to be richer than any outside Calcutta. The Maharaja also outlawed the last vestiges of slavery in 1884, reformed the courts, administration, revenue collection, the police and the military forces of the state. A rackets and tennis player of international repute and a keen cricketer. Author of “Shooting in Cooch Behar” (1908). He d. suddenly while recuperating from pneumonia, at No 22 Marina Court Avenue, Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex, 18th September 1911 (crem. at Golders Green Crematorium, London, and his ashes interred at the Keshab Ashram, Cooch Behar), having had issue, four sons and three daughters.
