John Narborough was born about 1685 the eldest son of Admiral Sir John Narborough and his wife, Elizabeth Hill. His father died at sea in 1688 and in his honour young John was created Baronet Narborough of Knowlton that same year. Three years later his mother married Admiral Sir Cloudsley Shovel.
In 1707 John and his younger brother James sailed with their stepfather aboard HMS Association which was sunk in the Scilly Naval Disaster on 22 October. John, James and their stepfather were among the nearly 2000 lost. John and his brother are memorialised at St Clement, Knowlton.
