Selbern Joseph Narby was born on Monday, September 15, 1902, in Emporium, Cameron County, Pennsylvania. His parents were John Andrew (Tuesday, August 19 1873 - Sunday, September 22, 1957) and Mabel C. Haugh Narby (Friday, November 18, 1970 - October 17, 1953). Selbern was the third of their four children. His father was a foreman in a dynamite powder plant.
Selbern served in the U.S. Army from Tuesday, January 11, 1921 to Friday, December 21, 1923. On Saturday, March 21, 1931, Selden married Martha Lucille Craven (Monday, September 20, 1909 - Sunday, April 4, 1999) at Cattaraugus County, New York. He was 28, she was 21. At the time he was working as laborer for a dynamite powder plant. They were married for sixty-one years.
Selburn was later promoted to shift supervisor at the Hercules Plant. Known as "Stub" was assigned the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift and not the day shift on Thursday, September 12, 1940. That afternoon a violent explosion destroyed twenty buildings, killed 51, and left around 300 injured. He was went to the plant after the explosion to help identify bodies and assist grieving families.
In retirement, Selbern and Martha relocated to Kenvil, Morris County, New Jersey. He passed away in New Jersey on Friday, May 1, 1992, at the age of 89.
