Mary Ida Nash was born about 3 Nov 1875 in Virginia. She was the daughter of James Wiley Nash and Illinois (Brown) Nash.

Mary married John Silas Wells (1850–1923) on 9 Dec 1896 in Mecklenburg, Virginia. The couple had at least four children including Reggie Frances Wells Hightower (1898–1934), Gracie Ardell Wells Callahan (1902–1999), Lucy Illinois Wells Ashworth (1904–1985) and Wiley Ward Wells (1910–1973).
