Biography

Paul was born in a house called Ghuznee Lodge[1] in Kensington, London, on 11 May 1889 (source of exact birth date is Encyclopaedia Brittanica [1] and Oxford Dictionary of National Biography [2]). He is the son of William Nash and Caroline Maud Jackson. He is the first of three children of the couple.

In the first census after his birth, in 1891, his parents are recorded as being in the household (perhaps visiting from Kensington?) of William's widowed mother-in-law Caroline Mary Jackson (66) at Queens Terrace, New Windsor, Berkshire.

The 1901 census confirms the family as living in Kensington, London. All three children of the marriage are present - Paul (11), John (7) and Barbara (5). All three children have been born in Kensington. The household have two servants present on the census date.

Paul's mother died on 14 February 1910.

In the 1911 census Paul is recorded as staying with his widowed father at Wood Lane House, Iver Heath, Uxbridge, Buckinghamshire. Paul is described as a part-time art student. Paul went on to become a renowned artist as did his brother John. See Wikipedia entries [3] and [4].

Paul married Margaret Theodosia Odeh in the fourth quarter of 1914 at St Martin-in-the-Field, Trafalgar Square, London. They had no children [5].

By the 1939 England and Wales Register Paul and Margaret have been married for about 25 years and are recorded at Holywell Street, Oxford. Paul described himself as "artist, writer, designer".

Paul Nash died on 11 July 1946 at 35 Boscombe Spa Road, Bournemouth, Hampshire (now Dorset), England, although the probate record states he was of 106 Banbury Road, Oxford. Probate was granted to his wife, Margaret Theodosia Nash.

He was buried in the churchyard at Langley, Buckinghamshire, his father's ancestral home.
