William was born in 1848, the second child in what became a large family. His parents were John Nash and Susanna (Dodd) Nash
He was baptised William Harry on 18 July 1848 in Langley Marish, Buckinghamshire.
The 1851 census shows his parents resident in Langley Marish, Buckinghamshire, with a farm of 577 acres and 44 labourers. There are three sons at this time - John (3), William (2) and Thomas (1). There are four servants recorded.
In the 1861 census the family are still in Langley Marish and their home is The Rectory. "The Rectory at Langley Marish was the home of the lay rector and owner of the tithes" [1]. The family has expanded greatly with nine children now recorded during the census - six sons and three daughters. The farm has reduced to 340 acres with 21 men and 7 boys being employed. There are five servants recorded in the household.
In 1871 the census records for Langley show William's family in George Green village/hamlet in the parish of Langley, Buckinghamshire. This may be the same residence as in the previous censuses. A tenth child, aged one, has been added to the family although only five are at the family home at the census. William is not present. His father is recorded as landowner/farmer of 340 acres employing 20(?) men and 7 boys. There are 5 servants.
Instead William (22) in 1871 is found in Kensington, London recorded as a visitor, along with his younger brother Thomas (21), to Frederick William Dry (37), "Commercial Clerk", in Argyll Terrace. William is described as a "Student of Law" and Thomas is an "Undergraduate at Lincoln College, Oxford".
In 1875 William's mother died.
In 1881 William (32) is back at home in Langley, where his father, now widowed, is still farming. The home is again referred to as "rectory" (see 1861 above). Six unmarried adult children, William (Barrister), Thomas (Barrister), Frank (Ship Broker), Zachary (learning farming), Susan, Edith, are in the household as is one married daughter, Margaret, and her husband Richard Helder. There are 3 servants. The farm is still 340 acres and employs 19 men and 3 boys.
William (about 39) married Caroline Maud Jackson (about 27) in 1887, the marriage registered at Windsor, Berkshire in the second quarter of the year[2].
In the 1891 census the couple are recorded as being in the household (perhaps visiting from Kensington?) of William's widowed mother-in-law Caroline Mary Jackson (66) at Queens Terrace, New Windsor, Berkshire. William Harry Nash and Caroline Maud Nash have a son, Paul, aged one, born in Kensington, London. Also in the home is one of Caroline's younger sisters, Rhoda (23). William is described as "Barrister at Law". There are three servants.
The 1901 census confirms the family as living in Kensington, London. William is still recorded as "Barrister". There are three children present, Paul (11), John (7) and Barbara (5). All three children have been born in Kensington. There are two servants.
William's wife died on 14 February 1910.
In 1911 William is a widower. He was married for 23 years and the census confirms there were no more than three children. He is now living at Wood Lane House, Iver Heath, Uxbridge, Buckinghamshire. Only Paul (21) of his children is present during the census. Paul is recorded as a part-time art student. Paul went on to become a renowned artist as did his brother John. See Wikipaedia entries [1] and [2].
William (67) re-married on 8 July 1915, marrying Audrey Mary Florence Handcock (born Aubrey), aged 53 and a widow. They married at St Peter's Church, Cranley Gardens, Kensington and Chelsea, London. William's residence at the time of marriage was given as Onslow Gardens, while Audrey's was given as Heath Farm House, Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire. Her father was Lord Charles Stuart Aubrey. The rector of Iver Heath officiated.
William Harry Nash died on 25 February 1929. Probate was granted to his two sons. (The probate calendar erroneously refers to one son being William Northcote Nash instead of John Northcote Nash).
His widow, The Honourable Audrey Mary Florence Nash of Abbot's Court, 28 Langley Road, Slough, Buckinghamshire, died on 24 November 1945 with probate granted to William's daughter Barbara Nash, spinster.
