Biography

Ann was the daughter of William Nash and Betty Hardwick. The inventory of Betty Nash, Culpeper County, Virginia, 1766, mentions Robert Sanders and wife. The Administrator’s Account and Distribution of the Estate of Betty Nash in 1772 refers to Robert Saunders and wife Ann.[1] Ann married Robert Sanders about 1761[2] but definitely prior to 1766.[3]

April 16, 1791 - Widow Ann Sanders appears in the tax rolls with sons James and Britton listed in the household indicating they are over 16 years.[4]

May 27, 1790 - Robert Sanders wrote his last will and testament. It names wife, Ann, sons William, James, Britain, Gabriel, Thomas, Lewis, and Larkin.[5]

April 16, 1791 - Widow Ann Sanders appears in the tax rolls with sons James and Britton listed in the household indicating they are over 16 years.[6]

April 7, 1792 - Widow Ann Sanders is listed in the tax rolls with sons James and Gabriel listed in the household indicating they are over 16 years. Son Britton is residing in the household of William Sanders, Ann’s oldest son.[7]

June 20, 1793 - Widow Ann Sanders is listed in the tax rolls with son James listed in the household. Also listed as over 16 and in the household is William Thornhill.[8] He is the son of Bryant and Leannah Nash Thornhill, both deceased.[9] Leannah was the sister of Ann Nash Sanders.

July 25, 1814 - Written in 1813 but recorded by an order of the Fauquier County Court, the estate, both real and personal, of Robert Sanders was divided. This division provided for the care of Ann Sanders “Lastly we reserve for the use and maintenance of the widow Ann Sanders, Manuel & Hannah her life and sixty dollars annually to be paid by the different Legatees. In case either of sd. Negroes Manuel and Hannah become an expense to said widow it shall be paid equally by the Legatees. We also reserve for her use the household and kitchen furniture.” Sons James, Britton, Gabriel deceased, Thomas, Lewis, and Larkin each received a portion of the acreage Robert had owned at his death. This division was done by Thomas Hunton, James Hunton, Owen Thomas, and Eppa Hunton.[10]

She passed away in 1816.[11]
