Philip Edgar was born on 6 January 1882 at Cradock in the Cape Colony; he was the son of William Moxon Nash and Elizabeth Jemima (Shepherd) Nash.

He was 33 years old when he married 29-year-old Emily Augusta Stow at Port Alfred on 20 July 1915.[1]
