Fritz was born in 1913 in Briesen, a province of Graudenz, Prussia. He was born in a German colony, and worked as a laborer (farmhand) in the Mennonite colonies. This is how he met his first wife, Irmgaard, who was the daughter of the estate owner. They married in 1939 but divorced when their only son was 2.
Fritz remarried and had a daughter.
He lived in East Germany after the war.
