Martel's Expedition to Burgundy

Charles Martel's expedition to Burgundy and the Rhone Valley[1] Third Buckwheat raid by the East

Charles Martel intervened in Burgundy in 736 , to exercise his power. Habibai Natronai ben David is one of the faithful.[1]

The Duke of Mauron, prefect of Marseilles, one of the Frankish patricians, was almost the only master in Provence since 721. The authority of the Frankish kings is no more powerful than the emperors.[1]

The Saracens still possess Septimania, their first conquest in France, governed by Jusif Abdérame.[1]

Being afraid of the ravages made by the Franks, Mauronte and his confederates form a secret league with Jusif to whom they promise to introduce him to the thence of the Rhone.

The presence of Charles Martel intimidates Mauronte and the other rebels.[1]

In 736 , as soon as they were informed of his departure to make war against the Saxons, they resumed their arms, and in execution of the secret treaty they delivered to the infidels the following towns and other places: Avignon, where they commit a thousand damages, Arles, whom they plunder and where they slaughter the inhabitants in spite of their surrender,[1]

The Saracens took possession of Arles all the more easily, since, having been of the domain of Eudes, the successors of this prince, who do not expect this surprise, are not in a position to defend it .

Aix, which they depopulated by fire and fire,

Cimiez, buried under his ruins,

Saint-Remy, Tarascon, Cavaillon, Apt ...

Uzès, Viviers, Valence, Vienne, Lyon,

The part of Burgundy to the left of the Rhone and the Saone,

The island of Lérins, where 500 religious are massacred, with Saint Porcaire, their superior,

The monastery of Marseilles, where St. Eusebius and her 40 nuns cut their noses and make deep wounds in their faces, so as not to suffer the most humiliating outrages.

These courageous virgins are massacred, like the monks of Lerins, and win the palm of virginity and that of martyrdom.

The Saracens carry desolation in all the countries situated on both sides of this river:[1]

Holy places desecrated, monasteries soiled or even ruined, churches destroyed,

Pillaged cities, ransacked houses, demolished castles,

Delivering to the flames the booty which they could not carry away,

An infinite number of people massacred, taking as slaves men, women, children, and transporting them into Spain, without any one daring to oppose or course of so many evils, nor to stop the fury of the barbarians.

During four years, the Saracens under the leadership of Jusif renew every year their races in the province.[1]
