Life Story

Alphonse Hendricus Matheus Hubertus Naus was born in 1845 in Sint-Truiden, Limbourg, Belgique.[1] Sint-Truiden (Dutch pronunciation: [sɪnt ˈtrœy̯də(n)]; French: Saint-Trond [sɛ̃ tʁɔ̃]; Limburgish: Sintruin) is a city and municipality located in the province of Limburg, Flemish Region, Belgium, near the towns of Hasselt and Tongeren. The municipality includes the old communes of Aalst, Brustem, Duras, Engelmanshoven, Gelinden, Gorsem, Groot-Gelmen, Halmaal, Kerkom-bij-Sint-Truiden, Melveren, Metsteren, Ordingen, Runkelen, Velm, Wilderen, and Zepperen.

The city is in the centre of Belgium's fruit-producing region, Haspengouw (Hesbaye), and is renowned for its pears, apples (Jonagold), and sweet cherries. He attended the College of St Servals in Liege, Belgium in which he graduated in 1864. Alphonse was a learned man of literature, law and languages earning a Docteur en Droit in 1868 from the University of Liege. In the late 1800's he was dissatisfied with the political and religious situations in his homeland and migrated to America in 1873 a board the S.S. "Idaho" from Liverpool, England. Before his immigration, he decided to change his name to that of his mother, vanDaell. From this date on, he was known as Alphonse Hendricus Matheus Hubertus Naus van Daell. It was unusual for a learned, high society man to migrate and he did not follow the same path as many other natives of the Netherlands. He arrived in New York and came to the New Jersey area. This is where he met his future wife, Clara Elizabeth Vollert. Clara was born in Germany and immigrated with her family to America in 1873. They were married in the German Reformed Church in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1876. Seeking employment in academia the family moved firstly to Kentucky where Alphonse was employed at the Kentucky College for Women, Danville, Kentucky as the Director of Modern Languages. This is where their first child was born in 1877. In 1879 they moved to Philadelphia, PA where he taught in many private schools. In 1880 he became a Professor of Languages in Bayonne, Hudson, New Jersey. In 1885 he became an instructor at Haverford College and a Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania, PA. Soon after in 1886, the family moved to Cambridge, MA where Alphonse became the Director of Modern Languages in the Boston High and Latin Schools. In 1889 he became the Department Head of Languages at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology until his leave of absense due to ill health.[2] He authored several books on the French language still available for purchase today. The family had 2 more children and lived in Cambridge at 105 Irving Rd. until he moved to Wiesbaden, Germany on the advice of his doctor.

Home of Alphonse and Clara vanDaell
