Biography

Andrés Nava was a native born Texan, who was born in 1810. He is reported to be brother of Dorotea Munis and the half-brother of Carmel Gonzara. [1]

His military service was a 6 month term and he was assigned to the command of Juan N Seguin. It turns out Andrés was an excellent marksman. Possibly that elevated his rank faster.

He served in the Siege of Bexar, occurring Oct - Dec, 1835. After this he was stationed in the Alamo garrison as sergeant under the command of Juan N. Seguin.[2] Some of his company left the Alamo early in February, to summon more supplies, men and never returned.. Sgt Nava elected to stay with the Alamo for its defense.. The Mexican Army arrived Feb 23, 1836..

Nava was killed in the battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836. The remains were buried in San Fernando Cathedral. [3]

Note: Damasio de los Reyes recognized Nava's body in the Alamo ruins as he was removing the bodies to the outside to be burned and reported this. He and Juan Seguin testified he knew Andrés Nava had been present in Feb. and March of 1836 without leaving the Alamo, without owning any land grants or property, and was a native born Tejano.[4] [5]

Later on, relatives of Nava, a half-brother, Carmel Gonzara, and his sister, Dorotea Muñís applied for a land grant stating that Nava died at the Alamo. Later an addendum was noted they were too poor to continue the claim, March 26 1861.[6]
