Military Service

Private in Company C of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States to enlist men of color during the Civil War. Enlisted on 21 March 1863 from Montrose, Pennsylvania. He was about 18 years old, single and working as a mechanic when he enlisted. Mustered out with his regiment.

His brother-in-law Henry Johnson also served in Company C.

Fellow mechanic Daniel Nelson of Montrose, Pennsylvania also enlisted to Company C on 21 March 1863 so they may have been friends or coworkers.

Death
