Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

Margaret Naylor was born on 5 Feb 1808, and christened on 21 Feb 1808 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. She was the daughter of William Naylor. Her mother Margaret (Heaton) Naylor wasn't named in the record; her father was a collier of Windle.

Margaret married Edward Mercer on 8 Dec 1828 at Rainford Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot. Both were of the local parish, and neither had been married before; Edward was a collier. The witnesses were Ellen Mercer and William Burrows.

Their son John was christened on 14 Feb 1838 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot. The family's address was given as Parr, and his father's occupation as collier.

Their daughter Margaret was born in 1844, and christened on 19 Nov 1844 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot. Her father's occupation was given as collier, and the family's address as Parr.

Edward died in 1845, aged 37. He was buried on 4 Nov 1845 at St Helens Chapel of Ease. His address was given as Parr.

Margaret married Stephen Irwin on 25 Dec 1847 at All Saints Church in Rainford, Lancashire. Both were of full age (21 or more) and living in Windle. Stephen was a labourer. Margaret was a widow, but it was Stephen's first marriage. Their fathers were John Irwin (labourer) and William Naylor (farmer). The witnesses were Robert Lawton and Margaret Birchall.

Research Notes

Parents

Evidence linking Margaret to these parents, besides the baptism record:

  • Margaret's daughter Margaret Mercer was with Margaret's parents in the 1851 census.
  • Margaret's brother James Naylor was with her and her husband in the 1851 census; he's described as Stephen's step-brother but it seems likely brother-in-law is what was meant by this.
