Biography

Henry was born about 1856. By 1881 he's an iron worker, and marries Dorothy Ann Bolton. 1891 finds him a gas stoker (specific job at the iron works), and 1901 iron worker. His elder brother William was a mill furnaceman (1871) and his son Sam's first job is at the steel works.

His mother Catherine Naylor, born Newcastle, is a single parent in 1861, with children aged William 11, Henry 4 and Margaret 1, so if previously married circa 1850, her husband presumably died about 1860. By 1871 she has remarried, to Matthew Smith, age 30 and 10 years her junior, although by 1881 only 6 years younger! He was from Ireland, and has several jobs over the years, a puddler in 1871, a railway servant in 1881, and a "cementary" (cemetery or cement) labourer in 1891. Catherine worked as a seamstress, and is dead before 1891, when Matthew is a widower, living with son Henry and Dorothy,
