Sam was born in 1894 in Gateshead. In the 1911 census, when 16 he was living at home in Newcastle and a general labourer at a steel works. Shortly after he moved to Newcastle to work as a coal hewer for the Burradon & Coxlodge Coal Co., according to his army release which says he was there 4 years before enlistment. We are not sure if and for how long he worked there after the war. Sam stood 5' 8 1/2" and was stocky.
Sam was enlisted 21.5.15 and was placed in the 2/1 Northumberland Brigade RFA. This was a TA unit created as a reserve for the regular brigade already deployed in France. He served in France from 3.7.16 to 24.12.18 as a gunner with B Battery 315th Brigade RFA, which was attached to the 63rd (Royal Naval) Division from 5.7.16 to 11.2.17, taking part through the armistice in some 11 battles on the western front, including the Somme, Arras and Passchendaele. (His cousin-in-law to-be Arthur Varey-27 was also in action at Passchendaele, with the 63rd Division) The 315th was equipped with horse-drawn 18 pdr field guns. Sam's widow told us he was gassed in the war, and although there is no mention of treatment in his medical or disability record, even minor exposure may have aggravated other conditions (exposure to coal dust at work) and contributed to his early death.
The casualty active service an entry for 21.5.17 relates to rank, not casualty. Sam ended the war a L/bombardier, returned from France 24.12.18 and was demobbed 21.1.19. He was awarded the British war Medal and Victory Medal.
He was back in Gateshead in 1920, and married Lizzie Naylor in 1922, having 4 daughters, before his untimely death at 37 in 1931.

ELECTORAL
In 1923 (Autumn) only Samuel and mother (?) Dorothy are listed at 13 Lichfield St. (and Septimus in the Spring). Why no Elizabeth?

Only now, 1924, does Elizabeth appear at 13 Lichfield Street. Women over 30 and who (or whose husband) met property criteria, were allowed to vote. But Elizabeth was born in 1891, so there must be some reason why she was not on the 1923 role as wife of Samuel.
