Notes

Report by Michael of Heirlines confirms: There was indeed a marriage in 1878 of a James Riches to an Emma. The record of this marriage shows that James was son of Robert, and Emma, whose maiden surname was Neale, was the daughter of a Richard Neale. This is the marriage of your Edward’s parents. It took place at Ashmanhaugh, which is where his mother was born – it was traditional to marry in the brides parish, and showed that James Riches was a labourer from the parish of Mendham, which he absolutely was, and that the bride, Emma Neale, was a spinster from the parish of Ashamhaugh, details which are also just as they should be.
