Biography

Birth

Thomas was born on 16 August 1822, the son of Daniel Neale, weaver, and Sarah Kinder. He was baptized, along with his siblings, Daniel, Sophia, William and Edward, on 24 July 1836 by T. Dix at the Independent church in Bedworth, Warwickshire.[1]

1841 Census

Thomas appears on the 1841 census in Bedworth, aged 18, a coalminer. He is with his parents, Daniel (35) and Sarah (41) and his siblings: Daniel (16), Sophia (14), William (10) and Frances (2).[2]

Marriage

Thomas married Alice Cater on 18th February 1844 at Bedworth, Warwickshire.[3]

Arrival in Australia

Thomas (aged 26), along with his wife Alice (aged 23) and children, Amos (7), Mary Ann (4), and Sophia (less than 1 year), as well as his brother Henry and family, arrived in Australia amongst the first Assisted immigrants to arrive in Brisbane aboard Artemisia on 13 December 1848.[4]

Note: In reporting Thomas's death in the 15th Dec 1903 issue, The Darling Downs Gazette reported that "out of fourteen children, eleven are still living." [5] Alice's death certificate (1896) lists 11 living children + 4 deceased (3 males, 1 female.)[6] David and William are two of the males. (David died aged 2 weeks in 1846. William died in 1883; his name is not listed as living on Alice's death certificate.) To date, no record of another two children have been found.

Death

Thomas died on 10 Dec 1903 at the age of 82 years in Allora.[8][9] He was buried in the Allora Cemetery.[10]

Allora Cemetery

Thomas was buried 11 December 1903 Ref-Monumental grave CE-10-19 alongside his wife Alice buried 13 January 1896. Buried with Thomas is a grandson and his wife.
