Biography

John was born on 24 January 1579 at Wollaston, Northamptonshire,{source needed} the son of John Neyll of Yelden in Com. Bedford and of Wollaston in com. Northampton and of Grace dau of John Buttler of Cotkenles in Com. Pembroke.[1] This 1579 birth date looks suspect given he married in 1593 and his wife was born in 1565.

He married Elizabeth FitzGeoffrey in Milton Ernest, Bedfordshire on 17 Dec 1593, "Gentleman"[2][3] Yet the Visitation shows his wife as the daughter of George FitzGeoffrey of Crekers (Barford)

His first wife must have died for he married Elizabeth Conquest, daughter of Sir Richard Conquest, in Houghton Conquest, Bedfordshire on 12 Dec 1599[4] John Neale, Gentleman, in Houghton Conquest baptised two children there, Edmund 11 January 1600/01 born 6 January, and Elizabeth 4 March 1601/02 born 27 February.[5][6]

VCH Wollaston has this to say about John Neale - In 1564 the rectory was bestowed by Queen Elizabeth on George Carleton, who sold it in 1581 to John Neale.this must have been John's father. In 1594 Neale, as proprietary rector of the church, this was probably the son, after marrying Elizabeth FitzGeoffrey reported that the chancel was very ruinous and almost falling, so that it was 'of no use either to the church or the inhabitants, and moreover cannot be repaired except at great cost, therefore he desires to be relieved of the obligation'. John Neale's descendants remained in possession for over a hundred years. He with his second wife Elizabeth and Edmund Neale, who was perhaps their son, dealt with the rectory by fine in 1623 and again in 1633. Edmund Neale died in 1671[7]

He passed away in 1656.{source required} There's no such burial in Houghton Conquest parish register.

Research Notes

What's the evidence that it was John Neale from Wollaston, Northants, who had a daughter in Neunhan Pardox, Worcs, and who died in Houghton Conquest, Beds? She wasn't born in Neunhan Pardox - that was where her alleged husband was from.

Can anyone show me exactly where Neunhan Pardox is in Worcestershire? Or even in England? A google search only finds references in connection with the Fielding family. The positive news is that John and Elizabeth (Conquest) are shown in the Visitation as having a daughter Elizabeth. All that's needed now is to link her to Richard Fielding. And to find the mythical Neunhan Pardox! (later - it's actually the hamlet of Newnham Paddox, in the parish of Monks Kirby, in the county of Warwickshire.)
