John decided when he was about 10 or 11 he wanted to be a ship's captain This ambition put him into the science stream at school after which he went to The University of Southampton pre-sea training college at Warsash. He joined Royal Mail Lines as an apprentice in 1957 and progressed to Chief Officer before going ashore into Shaw Savill's dock office as Docking Master. In1973 He was made redundant in Furness Withy's great shake up (The night of the long Knives) From there he joined Venizelos Shipping as Asst Operations manager where he got his first command then went to Gulf Shipping after Venizelos returned to Greece. In Gulf he was Liner Manager for 6 lines then in 1980 he joined Eawa Marine as Manager running a liner service to Asuncion in Paraguay. Eventually, draft reductions in the upper River Plate made it impossible to continue so he joined Sorek Shipping as marine and Liner superintendent running a line from N.Europe to Turkey then road transport on to Iraq and Iran When they started fighting that ended so he transferred to the Gibraltar office as marine Superintendent for a fleet of owned and managed ships under the Gib flag. He was also non-exclusive class surveyor for Hellenic Register in Gib and Southern Spain. He was offered a post running the branch Ofice in Beira Mozambique. He stayed in Mozambique for 12 years working for Mozima then AMI and finally Manica before retiring back to UK in 2003.

Hi John!

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Hello John. Thanks for your post on my profile. I have many Mary Hogan's in my tree, but so far none who were born outside of Canada. My 3rd great grandfather James Hogan (1811 - 1856) and my 3rd great grandmother Mary Tobin (1809 - 1899) were both born in Wicklow and came to Canada in 1846. Any connections you have would be great and exciting! Julie (Hogan) Bell

I agree with the mission statement and am willing to abide by the rules. I have made my tree back to the 1700's with a lot of help from other enthusiasts and I am equally willing to help any one else.
