Obituary

Obituary Bridget Cogan
"Death of an Old. Resident.—It is with much regret that we have to record the death of one of the oldest and most highly esteemed residents of the district in the person of Mrs. Bridget Cogan, wife of Mr. James Cogan, of Woodend North. She had not enjoyed good health at times for some years past, but the illness to which she succumbed, at her late residence, on Tuesday afternoon attacked her on the 14th inst. Dr. Lines attended her, but, though he did everything possible for her, neither his efforts nor the care and attention which she received from her relations and friends, were of avail. On the contrary, she became worse, and died, as stated, on Tuesday last.
Mrs. Cogan, who was a resident of the district for about 30 years, was 56 years of age, and, in addition to her husband, leaves four children to mourn her death, the news of which was received with general regret in Woodend, where, as a mark of respect to her, most of the business people kept up shutters to their windows on Wednesday and Thursday. The deceased lady’s remains were interred in the Woodend Cemetery on Thursday afternoon. The funeral was very largely attended, the cortege including over 40 vehicles and a large number of horsemen. The re mains of the deceased were first conveyed to St. Ambrose’s Church where a service was held, and then removed to the cemetery, the Rev. M. Quinn officiating at the grave."[7]

On the anniversary of Bridget's death her husband and family published the following In Memoriam notice[8]:

"In Memoriam" - Bridget Cogan 1897

Research Notes

The baptism identified as Bridget's states her parents are Thos. Neenan and Mary Flaherty with sponsors Thos. Neenan and Mary Neenan. No other baptism can be located and there is no marriage records or other birth records for a Thos. Neenan and Mary Flaherty. It is believed that this is a clerical error on behalf of the priest/registrar.

I would really appreciate if any family member has a photo of Bridget they could share. My side of the family do not appear to have one. Perhaps the Sneyd family (Bridget's sisters family) or Colwell (Bridget's daughter married into this family)?
