Janet graduated from McClusky High School in 1955, married Tom in 1957 while working at Harvard Law School. They moved to Minot in 1962, and she was in the North Dakota State Legislature from 1974 until her death. Starting December 2002, she was the Speaker for the House. She was also involved in the International Peace Garden, a member of the United Methodist Church, and a life member of the Germans from Russia Heritage Society.
