Biography

Jenny Negron was born on 3 November 1930 in New York, New York to Carmelo Negron and Julia Rosario, both originally from Puerto Rico.^[1] Her father Carmelo was a numbers runner for organized crime, which was probably why he was murdered on 21 June 1934 in New York City.^[2] Jenny was just three years old, her sister Aida 2 years old, and her brother Carmelo Junior an infant. This forced Jenny's mother Julia to go on "home relief"--welfare--while she raised her children. In those days investigators would come into your home and look under the beds and into the closets to see if you had two coats or two or three pork chops and ask where you got it, who it belonged to. Julia hated it and couldn't wait until her girls were old enough for her to go back to work. Her niece Rosemary Diaz never forgot it and the lesson her Aunt Julia drew from it and taught them--to never let yourself become dependent on anyone or anything. Jenny's brother Carmelo died at 5 years old on 8 April 1939 of meningitis.^[3]

Jenny married a man named Darcy and had a son that was born with severe birth defects and soon died as an infant. According to her cousin Rosemary, Jenny never really recovered from that, never forgave God for that. Jenny was delightful to be with--witty, classy, well-informed and smart. Until she had too much alcohol--and that was inevitable given any time spent with her. She had a daughter Adrienne she raised alone, supporting herself and her daughter as a bookkeeper.

Her mother Julia eventually moved to California where her other daughter Aida resided. She died on 30 Apr 1990 in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, California, USA. ^[4] Jenny died on 20 January 2009 in Scottsdale, Arizona where her daughter Adrienne resided.^[5]

1940 US Census - Julia Negron (neé Rosario), age 31, is enumerated as head of household in New York City on 22 East 103rd Street. She is listed as having completed 4th grade. Also in the household are Julia's daughters Jenny, Age 9 and Aida, Age 8, her sister Virginia Rosario, Age 29 and two lodgers, Ellia and Raimondo Extrada, Ages 32 and 23.
