Ray farmed all his life and was proud of the fact that he never worked (for money) for another man. He did trade labor with neighboring farmers. He and Eva owned 80 acres and grew oats, corn, wheat, milo. They raised cattle (dairy and beef), hogs, sheep, and chickens. Eventually they raised turkeys and made enough money to pay off their farm. Ray liked the hogs and usually had around 100 at any given time. He also liked working with horses and mules. As a hobby he enjoyed repairing harness. Ray was a quiet man who loved his family and his farm. He was an elder in the Presbyterian church. He completed eighth grade in the community school. He liked telling funny stories and jokes.
