Charles was born on 31 Jan 1885 in Harwich, Kent, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of John Adolphus Nelles and Priscilla C Pearson. [1][2][3][4]

Charles was married to Edith May McMeekan[5][6] on 14 Oct 1908 in Stratford, Perth, Ontario, Canada, at the house of his bride's parents.[4] Their marriage was witnessed by Charles' brother, John A. Nelles Jr. and Edith's father, James McMeekan.[4]

Charles worked as a teamster at a stave mill at the time he was married[4][5], perhaps owned by his father.[4] Within a few years, he was working at the Grand Trunk Railway as a brakeman[6], which was where his father in law worked as a conductor.[4]
