Maria Gardner Nelson was born 10 Jan 1815.[1]. [2] in Lyman, Grafton, New Hampshire. (Monroe was created by a division of Lyman in 1854). Maria was the daughter of William Nelson and Hannah Moore. Maria's parents spent most of their adult life in Lyman (later reconfigured as Monroe) New Hampshire. It is presumed but not proven that she was born there.
After her father died in 1830 she and her siblings gifted their inheritence to their mother[3]
See narrative for her husband, Ebenezer Blake for many details of her life, as outlined in his E W Blake's diary.
Maria passed away 15 Mar 1885 and is buried in the North Monroe Cemetery.[5][6][7]
15 Mar 1885 “Mother died at 9PM suddenly” [8]
1861, 28 Jan: James Blake apparently owned land in Monroe, New Hampshire - deed record of James L and Hannah S Blake of Berlin, Coos, NH, sell land to Maria G Blake for $500. Land located in lot #4 in Monroe near the junction of state route 135 and the Back Road. Maria's husband E W Blake was not mentioned on this deed. This land is part of what was formerly Maria's Nelson family land. [9]
1870 Federal Census, Monroe, Grafton, New Hampshire. [10]
John and Helen Jones owned more than one parcel of land in Monroe. One may have been on Route 135 near Buffom Road. This is where Eben Blake and Maria returned after their time in Waterford, Vermont:
"Feby 20th 1870 We have sold out here at Waterford. We think of going down to Monroe to Angelines. It seems most like home to us - now. March 2d We are now at Anges, just got moved."[11]
This was probably a 150 acre parcel bounded by the Connecticut river, Horace Duncan, Henry McColl, Janet Holmes and Oliver Badger that was later a part of a suit against Horace Duncan - Horace was forced to yield back this property after Maria G Blake prevailed in court 13 Feb 1882 - after both her husband and John B Jones had died and Maria was then living in Littleton. (based on attempted interpretation of deed descriptions by RHSeale|2000[12]
1880 "Mariah G Blake" lived in Littleton, New Hampshire, age 64, widow, keeps house. Her father was born in Scotland, mother in NH. With her is her daughter Helen A Jones, age 43, also widowed, b. Maine, father b. Maine. Helen's two daughters "Katie A" age 20, and "Addie M", age 10 were in the household along with boarders.[13]
