Samuel Nelson was born on a farm called Rimforth in Tjärstad, Östergötland, Sweden on the 15th of September 1837.
Samuel was the son of Nils Jönsson and Brita Pettersdotter. He married Christine Peterson in 1870 in Henry, Illinois. Samuel applied for a pension in 1889; his widow received one after his death. He was a Corporal in the 11th Ohio Light Artillery. He enlisted on September 12,1861 (age 29) and was mustered out November 5, 1864, with his regiment.
