Biography

Selmer Nelson was born October 5, 1889 in Forest River, Walsh County, North Dakota according to his WW I draft registration. [1] Selmer's actual birth records have not yet been located, nor has any evidence yet been found showing that his family lived in Walsh County, North Dakota, although his mother's sister lived in Grand Forks, (about 20 miles away), so it sounds likely.

Selmer's parents were Nels Nelson and Anna Rasmusdatter Nelson. The family appears in the 1895 Minnesota census in Salem Twp., Olmsted County. [2]

It stated that he was a natural born citizen, born in Forest River, North Dakota, USA. Selmer was single, and requested an exemption from the draft because he was deaf in one ear. [1]

Selmer Nelson can be found on the 1920 US census for Sargent Twp., Mower County, Minnesota at the age of 30, living in the household of his uncle and aunt, Martin and Rosy Hanson (his father's sister) and their children.
