THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, June 1, 2006.

John M. Nelson, 84, of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown and formerly of Roland and rural Boone, died Wednesday, May 31, at the Iowa Veterans Home. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Friday, June 2, at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall streets in Boone. Following the services, the body will be cremated and burial of the cremains will be at a later date in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, northwest of Gilbert.

John was born March 22, 1922, in Boone, the son of Wesley and Odellia (Wirth) Nelson. He graduated from Story City High School in 1939. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Velma Hanig April 14, 1947, near Wesley. Velma died in 1983. He married Donna Hougland May 17, 1985, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, northwest of Gilbert. In earlier years, he farmed in eastern Boone County and also worked at Kerns-Desoto Furniture in Roland. He later owned and operated John's Lounge in Roland. He had been a resident of the Iowa Veterans Home since July 2003.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Velma, three daughters, Gloria and Laura Nelson and Beverly Prentice; one son, Alvin; and two sisters, Margaret Johnson and Wanda Schroeder.

He is survived by his wife, Donna of Centerville; five sons, Dale of Rhodes, Dean of Roland, Wesley of Ames, Doug and wife, Jesselyn, of Nevada, and Dan of Edmund, Okla.; three daughters, Sharon Beach and husband, Bob, of Marshalltown and Connie Patten and husband, Bob, of Boone, and Deb Disbrowe of Des Moines; three sisters, Lucille Thomas of Scottsdale, Ariz., Mona Ivis and Velma Bricker and husband, Duane, all of Boone; 16 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall streets in Boone.

Memorials may be given to the family to be used at its discretion.
