Harriet was born about 1877 in Montrose, Pennsylvania.

She was the daughter of Sarah and David Nelson, and the niece of Civil War soldier Daniel Nelson of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States to enlist men of color during that war.
