Biography

Daughter of George Washington Nelson (1809–1881) and Martha Ellen Yeager (1817–1877). Born and lived in Washington County, Tennessee.

Marriage records have not been identified, but she is presumed to have married John Henry Barkley sometime between the 1860 Census and the birth of her first child with J.H. Barkley sometime around 1963.

In 1865, John Henry Barkley and Margaret Nelson had daughter Martha Ellen Barkley. Martha Ellen Barkley (later Patterson) died March 23, 1948 of a fractured left hip and myocarditis in Greeneville, Greene, Tennessee at the age of 83.^[1]

In 1867, John Henry Barkley and Margaret Susan Nelson had daughter Minnie Barkley. Minnie Barkley (later Phinney) died May 25, 1951 of myocarditis in Greeneville, Greene County, Tennessee at the age of 84.^[2]

The United States Census, 1870^[3] found John H Barkley, a 34 year old white male, born in Tennessee, living in District 3, Washington County, Tennessee. His occupation was "Depot Agent". With him were his wife Margaret and four girl children, and a white woman named Hester whose occupation was "Domestic". She could not read or write. Enumerated immediately after this family was a family headed by James Barkley, a 30 year old black man, with 16 year old Josephine, also black, and 8 year old Charlotte, enumerated as mulatto.

Margaret Susannah Nelson Barkley is claimed to have died on July 1, 1871 (unsourced).
