Biography

Burgess Nelson Jr. was born on 1 Jan 1764 in Frederick, Maryland, son of Burgess Nelson Sr. (1727 - 1765) and Sarah (Howard) Nelson (1733 - 1815).

His sister was Sarah Nelson (~1760 - ).

Burgess (22) married Sarah Ridgely (~19) (~1766 - ~1806) on 11 Mar 1786 in Baltimore, Maryland.[1] Their children were:

  1. Elisha C Nelson (~1780 - ~1864)
  2. Burgess Nelson III (1794 - 1867).

Burgess allegedly committed suicide by hanging and died on 1 Apr 1852 in Frederick aged 88.[2]

"Suicide of an Aged Devine -- The Rev. Burgess Nelson, one of the oldest ministers belonging to the M. E. Church, committed suicide by hanging himself at the residence of his son-in-law, James Stevens, Esq., in this [Frederick] county on Thursday [1 Apr 1852]. Mr. Nelson was about ninety years of age." [3]

"Burgess Nelson, an old Methodist clergyman, committed suicide at Frederick yesterday." [4]

"Rev. Burgess Nelson, an aged minister of the M. E. church, committed suicide on Thursday last, in Frederick county, Maryland, by hanging himself to a bedpost [...] Mr. Nelson was 90." [5]

"CASSELL, JOHN NELSON [...] son of George and Sarah Nelson Cassell, the former born in Maryland...the latter, a daughter of Rev. Burgess Nelson, of English descent and a minister of the Methodist Episcopal church." [6]

"Mrs. Sarah (Nelson) Cassell was born in Maryland, and was a daughter of Rev. Burgess Nelson, of the Methodist Episcopal faith, who was born in England." [7]

Michael Bartholow (son of Thomas), "born about 1770; married, Ann, daughter of Rev. Burgess Nelson; and died 21 Jan., 1843, aged 72. She died 21 Aug., 1842." [8]
