Biography

Birth

Alexander Nelson was born on 13 Jun 1795,[1] at Hebron, Maine, (then in Massachusetts), the son of Nathan and Jerusha Nelson.[2]

Marriages

  1. Alexander Nelson and Lydia Loring, both of Hebron, Maine, (then in Massachusetts) published their intention to marry at Hebron on 3 Mar 1817, and they were married there on 25 May 1817.[3][1]
  2. On 27 Feb 1820, the town clerk of Livermore, Maine (then in Massachusetts), certified "that an intention of marriage between Mr. Alexander Nelson of Chandler's Gore so called and Miss Hannah Fuller of Livermore hath been entered with me fourteen days prior to this date and been published in the Town of Livermore as the Law directs."[4] They married,at Livermore, on 1 Mar 1820.[5][6] [7]
  3. On 10 Feb 1830, Alexander Nelson and Betsey Griffith, both of Livermore, Maine, published at Livermore their intention to marry. [8] Alexander Nelson and Elizabeth B. Griffeth married on 5 Mar 1830.[5]

Residences

By 1820, Alexander Nelson was living at Chandler's Gore, which was an unincorporated area between the towns of Livermore and Hartford in Oxford County, Maine (in Massachusetts until 15 Mar 1820). The intention of his second marriage, published at Livermore in February 1820, calls him of Chandler's Gore,[4] and the 1820 Census shows him living there.[9] His second marriage intention, published in Livermore 10 in February 1830, calls him of Livermore,[8] but the 1830 Census still enumerates him at Chandler's Gore.[10] The 1928 history of Livermore, Maine, says that Alexander Nelson was an early settler and built a stone house on a farm that was in 1928 owned by a Percy M. Brown.[11] He continued to live at Livermore until his death in 1886.

Children

The children of Alexander Nelson are listed in his family Bible, with birth dates for all nine children and death dates for all except Moses. The first two children were with Lydia (Loring) Nelson and appear on the first page of the Bible.[1] The next four are with Hannah (Fiuller) Nelson and the last three with Elizabeth (Griffeth) Nelson, and all appear on the third page of the Bible.[12] The birth dates of the children with Hannah and Elizabeth are also documented in the vital records of Livermore, Maine,[13] and the dates agree with the dates in the Bible record for all the children.

Research Notes

Alexander Nelson Family Bible

The Alexander Nelson family Bible is in the possession of a Tracy St. Claire, who has posted images of the pages and transcribed the entries on the biblerecords.com website. (There are a few errors in the transcription.) According to the title page of the Bible, it was "The English Version of the Polyglott Bible Containing the Old and New Testaments, Franklin, N.H., published by Peabody and Daniell. 1844."[1] The web page says that Bible is in fair condition, covered in cloth with the signatures very crudely sewn together, and appears to be complete. Citations from the Bible in the Alexander Nelson family profiles are taken from the images of pages 1 through 4 on the web page.[15]

Unattributed Son

The 1928 history of Livermore, Maine, gives Alexander Nelson a son, James N. Nelson, who is says died in 1847 at age 24, shipwrecked at sea.[11] Neither the Alexander Nelson Family Bible nor the Livermore vital records have any record of such a son.
