Biography

Gustave (Nicolausson) Nelson migrated from Sweden to United States.

Johannes Gustaf Nicolausson was born on 15 Dec 1843 in Algutsboda, Kronobergs län, Sweden. He was the son of unwed mother Anna Maria Jonasdotter.^[1] They lived with his maternal grandmother, Stina Lisa Johansdotter and her husband Jonas Horsch.^[2]

Johannes Gustaf married Marianna Joelsdotter in Algutsboda on 17 Jan 1869.^[3] Soon after their marriage, they emigrated to the United States of America. In the US, Johannes Gustaf Nicolausson went by the name Gustave or August Nelson and his wife went by Mary Anna (Johnson/Joelson) Nelson.

In 1870, Gustave and Mary Anna were living in Logansport, Cass County, Indiana, United States of America. Gustave was working as a stonemason. Two young men from Sweden, Ewell Peterson and Charles Gustison, were living with them.^[4]

By 1880, Gustave and Mary Anna had had four children:^[5]

3. Frank Gustave Nelson (1876-1954)
4. Wilhelmina C "Minnie" (Nelson) Pennel (1878-1952)

In addition to them and their children, their household in 1880 included Gustave's cousin Frank Nelson and Mary Anna's brother Otto Johnson and sister Charlotte Johnson. They were living on High Street in Logansport. Gustave was unemployed, but Frank and Otto were both working at a spoke manufactory.^[5]

Gustave died on 12 Jun 1880 of a tumor in his side that he had suffered from for many months.^[6] He was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Logansport.^[7]
