Cleland was born in 1883. He is the son of Ella Scott and Cleland Nelson.^[1] He is listed with his parents on the 1900 Census in Lynchburg, Campbell County, Virginia.^[2] It is believed that neither Cleland nor his sister Helen; ever married and the two are listed as single in the same residence on the 1950 Census.^[3] He passed away in January of 1973^[4] at the age of 90^[5] and is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery.^[6]
