Legacy and Latterwill Made at Edinburgh, 9 September 1601, in presence of the notary and witnesses, Kathrein Nisbet, daughter of the deceased William Nisbet, merchant and sometime one of the baillies of the burgh nominated Issobell Mauchane, her mother, spouse to George Bannatyne, merchant, her only executrix. The 1200 merks which she inherited from her deceased father, brother and sisters was presently in the hands of George Bannatyne, her father-in-law who had intrometted with it honestly and had provided her with bed and board and also with clothing. She left 500 merks to Edward Nisbet, her brother; to Jonet Bannatyne, her burret gown, her burret cloak and her best red wyliecoat because her brother-in-law gave them to her together with the gold chain and an embroidered velvet belt; to Issobell Nisbet her niece her gown and cloak of grosgrain silk; to Bessie Craig, spouse to David Mauchane her best black cloak; to Isobell Mauchane their daughter 40 merks with her brown gown; to Jonet Mauchane, their daughter in respect of her age £30 with her old red wyliecoat; to Jean Admistoun daughter of James Admistoun 10 merks; to Bessie Cok 10 merks; to Marion Muir 10 merks; to Kathrein Smyth, daughter of Hary Smyth a black cloak having 5 velvet pasements about the tail; to Helene Reid 10 merks; to Kathrein Grahame 10 merks; to Barbara Hay £10; to Rachell Watsoun and Jonet Cuninghame, her mother, servants in her house, each of them 40 shillings, £4 in total; to the poor of the hospital 10 merks according to her mother’s discretion. Written by John Nisbet notary public and witnessed by Hendry Nisbet, late treasurer of the burgh, James Nisbet and William Nisbet merchants, his sons, Hendry Bannatyne, writer, Stevin Bannatyne, notary and David Robesoune notary. William, Nisbet 'ane honest and discreit man!' was made a freeman and burgess of the city in 1567 He married Isobel Mauchane who afterwards took as her second husband, George Ballenden, or Ballantyne, or Bannatyne,-the names are interchangeable-merchant burgess in Edinburgh.
