Biography

Samuel Marshall Nesbitt born 5 Nov 1839, Blacklick Twp., Indiana Co., PA, son of Nathaniel Nesbitt He farmed until 1866, then went to the old fields tow work for 1 year. He returned home and engaged in the lumber business until 1882 when he started working for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company as station master, freight and express agent in Tunnelton, until 1910, when he became a merchant. He served 20 years as a postmaster. In 1899 he bought a farm of 138 acres near Tunnelton and carried on its cultivation in connection with his other enterprises.

He married 26 Oct 1880, Martha J. Davis daughter of Samuel and Eliza (Miller) Davis of Conemaugh township, Indiana Co. They were members of the Presbyterian Church, and Samuel belonged to the Masons and the Sons of Temperence. Inn 1910 and 1920 they were living in Conemaugh Twp., Armstrong Co., PA.

He died 24 Mar 1924 Conemaugh, Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA

Funeral services were held at Tunnelton on Wednesday for Samuel M. Nesbitt, aged 84 years, a well known resident of Conemaugh township, who died on the homestead farm on March 24 from pneumonia, following a brief illness. Interment followed in the Saltsburg cemetery. He followed the pursuit of farming for many years, but later conducted a store and was ; railroad agent at Tunnelton. Several years ago he retired to the homestead farm. He was a man of sterling christian character and was a member of the Presbyterian church. His wife with these three sons, survive: Rev. Ralph B. Nesbitt, a missionary in Punjab, India; Paul Nesbitt, of Butler, and Nathaniel Nesbitt, residing at home.
