John James Nesbitt was born London, England In the Parish of Shadwell.[1]
Emigrated to America with his father's friend Mr. Gould, arriving in New York City in March or early April 1817. He couldn't find work in New York City for 3 months (he was 14 yrs old), so he departed for Quebec City on Captain Flint's vessel arriving June 17, 1817. His father's trade was as a shipwright so he was indentured to Mr. John Gouldies prominent shipbuilder in Quebec. He was to young and weak to work in the ship yards so he became a servant in Mr. Gouldies home, during his first 2 years. He grew to 6'4" and 300 lbs was a big man. In 1830 he started his own ship building commerce, located on the St. Charles River, just off rue Prine Edouard, in lowertown Quebec. His residence on rue Prince Edouard was most impressive, very large and constructed of grey stone and was situated just opposite his shipyard. Mr. and Mrs. John J. Nesbitt eventually opened their home as a temporary stopping place to help parents that had traveled to the area and had to be hospitalized. Later their home became an Irish Orphanage. John James was a Captain in the Ninth Battalion of Quebec Militia. Confirmation of his rank, as Captain, is dated the 11th day of August 1847 and signed by Lord Elgin of Kincardine. December 24th 1824 he left the Anglican religion and became a Catholic a little over a month before his marriage to Mary Cannon. She died at the birth of her 8th child on 9/17/1840. John re-married Catherine Slevin May 10, 1841 daughter of Surgeon Dr. John Slevin and Elizabeth Murphy. Mary Cannon had 8 children and Catherine Slevin had 9 both died at the birth of their last children.
He died 26 June 1882 age 80 years and 2 months. [2]
