Eliot Ness is Notable.
Eliot Ness, the son of Norwegian immigrants , was born in Chicago in 1903. Eliot graduated from the University of Chicago in 1925. He returned to receive his Masters Degree in Criminology.
After a short career in the private sector, he followed his brother-in-law into public service & joined the Treasury Dept. His impressive work led to his appointment by President Herbert Hoover to head a task force aimed at taking down gangster Al Capone. This task for became known as the Untouchables. Capone was eventually convicted of tax evasion & sent to prison. This marked a turning point in Ness' career. He was now a celebrity.
The stress of his career led to tumultuous private life, two divorces & three wives. He died of a heart attack at his home in 1957. The subsequent book, television show & movies about his Untouchables have made him a law enforcement legend.
