Notes: The son of Jacob & Christina Catherine (Miller) Ness, he may have had a twin brother named Elias. In 1850, he was a laborer living with his family in Lucas County, Ohio, and remained there for most of the decade before returning to Pennsylvania, and settling in East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County. He stood 5' 9" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lancaster October 10, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg October 19 as a private with Co. F, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa). He was honorably discharged June 6, 1862, by special order of Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell, no reason given in his compiled military service record.
