Biography

Johann was born in 1762. He was the son of Adam Neu and Veronica Kemmelin. He passed away in 1815.

The fact that Peter Ney married twice is shown by land records. In the division of Johan Adam Neu's plantation, as it was called, between his sons, John and Peter in 1783, Peter is listed with "wife Rebecca." Bindnagles Church records give Rebecca's maiden name as Karmini. In another land transaction dated January 20, 1790 Peter's wife is listed as "Margaret" and is so listed in all subsequent transactions. Therefore it becomes obvious that Peter married Margaret prior to January 1790 and that Rebecca died before that date, although no death record can be found for her nor any tombstone in any of the cemeteries in the area. Nor can a marriage record be found for Peter and Margaret.

Peter's father, Johan Adam Neu, left his plantation by will to his two sons, Peter and John, to be divided equally as to value between them to their own satisfaction. It therefore became a legal formality on October 24, 1783 for Peter and Rebecca to deed 100 acres "and allowances" to John and Catherine Ney and for John and Catherine to deed 88 acres "and allowances" to Peter and Rebecca, thus completing the land terms of the will. Other land transactions of Peter's were on January 20, 1790 when he and Margaret sold 100 perch to John and Catherine Ney for 3 pounds. On September 3, 1791, Peter bought 3/4 of an acre from Thomas Clark, Esquire for 2 pounds 5 shillings. This was a piece of land that Thomas Clark had previously bought from John and Catherine Ney for the same price. On October 3, 1791 Peter and Margaret re - ceived from Thomas Clark, Esquire, by endorsement of an indenture from John and Abraham Blough, two parcels of land, one for 10 acres and the other for 2 acres situated on the east side of the Quittapahilla Creek, across said creek from the south end of Peter's farm. Normally a wife's name only appears on a deed dealing with the sale of land, so this leads to the speculation that Margaret, Peter's wife, may have been a daughter of Thomas Clark since no money changed hands and it was deeded to both Peter and Margaret Ney. As the population grew the water rights of the Quittapahilla, as with all streams, became more important than for irrigation alone. There were already many grist and saw mills along the Creek and in the late 1780's still another prospect was rumored, that increased the demand for water rights. This was the Schuylkill and Susquehanna Canal. As a consequence, in 1791, '92 and '93 there was a flurry of speculative buying and Peter and Margaret sold their plantation or farm on January 13, 1792 (88 acres plus the 12 acres acquired in 1791) to Adam Orth and David Krause for 370 pounds. The Blough family, across the creek, also sold their holdings and there were many others who did the same. No death records have been found for either Peter or Margaret nor has a thorough search of cemeteries in the area led to the discovery of any tombstones for them.
