About 1780 Maria Katharina married Johann Peter Petri, also called "Schwarzer Peter" (Black Peter). Johann Peter was a member of the notorious robber gang of Schinderhannes. Johann Peter and Maria Katharina built a hut next to Johann Georg Neumann's in Hüttgeswasen where Johann Peter worked as a wood cutter and charcoal burner. They had nine children:
In 1792 French troops burnt down his hut. From that day onwards the family was always on the move. They left Hüttgeswasen and lived in several places in the Hunsrück area, near the Rhine and also in the Odenwald region until 1811.
Maria Katharina and a daughter were arrested for begging and vagabonding; they were transferred to the Trier poorhouse.
