Biography

Jennie (Neviazhsky) Goodman has Jewish Roots.

Jennie was born about 1866 in Kovno, Kovno, Russian Empire. The modern name of this location is Kaunas, Kaunas, Lithuania. She was the daughter of Kopel Neviazhsky and Gitel Mirel Unknown. [1]

Two families with the uncommon surname Neviazhsky lived in Kaunas, Lithuania. One family was Levite (Y-DNA haplotype R1a1) and the other family was Israelite (Y-DNA haplotype Q1). [2] Jennie’s branch is the Levite haplogroup R-M512.

In the early 1880s, Jennie immigrated to America and resided in Baltimore, Maryland. On October 7, 1888, she and Solomon Goodman were married by Rabbi Moses A. Schreiber in Baltimore. [3] Their first child, son Jesse Goodman, was born on November 5,1889 in Baltimore. [4]

Her husband was a cigar maker in Baltimore and later became a cigar manufacturer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In July 1897, an accidental tragedy resulted in the death of their young son, Morris, a few weeks later. Morris lit a match and his clothing caught fire. Solomon tried to extinguish the flames by first using his coat as a blanket, and then with his bare hands. Their young daughter, Katie, witnessed the incident. [5] Morris passed away on August 14, 1897 in Philadelphia.

On October 1, 1911 their fourteen-year-old son, David, passed away in Philadelphia. [6]

On the 1920 U.S. Census, Gabriel Nevyas and his eldest son, David Hamilton Nevyas, were listed as cousins in Solomon and Jennie's household in Philadelphia. Gabriel was a cigar maker who was born in either Russia or Poland. He lived in North Carolina, with his wife, Rachel (Moreines) Nevyas. They later moved to Baltimore and then to Philadelphia.

Jennie passed away on December 26, 1941 at her home at 5420 Warnock Street in Philadelphia. [7] Rabbi Matthew Rosen officiated at her funeral held at Berschler's Chapel at 730 Pine Street in Philadelphia. [8] She is interred at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. [9]
