Biography

Claude Neville is an Anzac who served in World War One.

Claude was born in about 1881. He was the son of William and Sarah Neville.

He emigrated from Australia to New Zealand where he married Lily Eva Kirker in 1902.

They had two daughters; Lilly Eva Myrtle (b. 1904, d. 1904) and Pearl Annie Gladys (b. 1903, d. 1931). It would appear Claude deserted his wife Lily:

WAIHI - Claude Clarence Neville, alias John Martin, alias John Laurenson, wife desertion, has been arrested by the Palmerston North Police on a charge of theft, and will be remanded to Waihi on termination of present sentence. (See Police Gazette, 1907, Page 321.)[1]

Claude was arrested on 16 November 1912 and charged with drunkenness (sentence 14 days) and breach of a prohibition order (sentence fine or 7 days).

He was also charged for numerous other offences, including default on his Maintenance payments.

He was living in Hamilton when he enlisted to fight in the 1st World War. His next of kin was recorded as Mrs S. Neville (mother), Perth, Western Australia.

On his second deployment his next of kin was recorded as Miss Dollie Neville (daughter), Washington Valley, Nelson, New Zealand.

Sapper; 6th Reinforcements; New Zealand Engineers, Tunnelling Company

He served on the Western Front (1917).

Claude returned from the war but died on 15 May 1918 at the age of 46 after being discharged from Wounds Inflicted or Disease Contracted while on Active Service.
